Then when I went back to see if the premixed mastic would work around heat, they said I needed to switch to bagged Thin Set Mortar that you mix with water (I'm not thrilled with this idea ). At first Home Depot told me that I should be okay.

I want to install slate tiles on a heavily plastered wall around my gas fireplace. Might want to check what is recommended for that particular tile too. Never know exactly what a slate tile might be. Type of thing where you really want to see the job in person. But I still would not rule using a masic. Slate tiles, I probably would go with a thin set over some type of masonary subsurface. Can be done, especially if the tiles are well outside the heat affected zones and are more a decorative function rather than forming part of the fireplace enclosure. If so, the same general rules apply to applying tiles to any non-masonary based wall. If there are presently plastered areas, they probably do not see much heat on a normal basis. Exactly where and how are the tiles applied. Also the details surrounding that particular job. In particular the amount of heating the tiles might see, what are the expected expansion / contraction type forces on a normal basis. It does not completely rule out using mastic over some type of drywall or a very good coat of plaster. How close are the tiles to heat? How much heat will the general area see?Īs a rule I would far prefer setting tiles in a fireplace area over either a masonary surface, properly prepared or over some type of backer board with proper mix of thin set.
